“Mommy, I wet the bed”
Mommy, I wet the bed, are words that most of us Moms are familiar with. Not that we want to hear it but, it reality in most of our lives. When my daughter was a bit younger she had an accident and her response was “Mommy I sweat all night” It is common for children up to the age of eight years to remain dry during the day but, wet the bed frequently at night, this called primary nocturnal Enuresis. This unfortunately the most common form of bedwetting.
It is recorded that bedwetting occurs mostly in boys than girls and the child will more likely be a bed wetter if one parent was as a child. The expert states that 15% of children that wet the bed will grow out of this set back. Very rarely bed wetting is caused by any physical problems. Many times it’s due to the child having a small bladder and not being able to detect when the bladder is full. Maybe the problem is, the child is having difficulties waking up from sleep. Children at a young age tend to be deep sleepers and sometimes it takes a horn to wake them. Something else to think about is the stress factor in the child’s life, how are they coping at home and at school? Is there anything different taking place or is anything on the horizon? And, last but not least there maybe a medical issue, which should be checked by a health professional.
Some Solutions

It is important for the child not to be punished or made fun of for bedwetting. A reward program should be set up for dry nights and the child should be allowed to change the wet sheets off their beds.
Refrain from giving the child fluids at night and ensure that the urinated right before bed and if possible before you go to bed.
No caffeine products such as chocolate or cola drinks during the latter part of the day.
If your child is okay wearing a disposable under pants then, go right ahead and give them the option.
Have the child do a physical examination by their health professional, it something is medically wrong it will be discovered and treated accordingly.
