Pet Adoption and children

Children and dogs make the ideal pals and create a relationship like none other. When a parent decides to bring a pet in the home it can truly be a nurturing experience. Children learn the fundamentals of friendship and see how to give unconditional love and receive it back. They learn how to develop trust  and a sense of responsibility.

It is important that parents give children guidance and direction when caring for a pet and explain the needs of the animal involve. Children should not be left on their own to care for their pets until they are of age to understand the daily requirements of pet care and the responsibilities involved.

Being presented with a dog and (in this article I am particularly talking about dogs) makes the child feels that this dog is his and almost like a parent there is the thought that I have to ensure that that this dog is taken care of. There may be the responsibility of taking the dog out for a walk, making sure the dog is fed and has clean water frequently and many times children like to help bath the dog, I know I use to love doing that. This is also a great time for parent and child to interact and bond over these processes.

When a child develop a special friendship with a dog it is a deep internal love that bounds the two, the child then develop good self esteem and may start communicating more and interacting. Once a child understands how special having a pet is, they will develop kindness, patience and gentleness.

Having a pet can truly be a life changing experience for a child.
