Do you know what you are eating?
It is our job as parents to ensure our children are eating as healthy as possible. There are the foods that our children would love to consume on a daily basis but, we know the detrimental effects they will have on the children. When we think out our food we would like to know that it is healthy and doing our bodies some justice, well most of us do. Most times I have to stop myself from buying certain foods that are just too complicated to be on a plate. Going simple is so much better and healthier. It is good to instill good healthy eating habits on our family.
What made me write this post is an article I read on Yahoo that speaks about< ‘the truth about your food”. This has really shed some light how I look at some of these package foods. I have been an avid label reader but, sometimes if I don’t see the obvious taboo stuff I think it is okay. No way is it; this article has enlightened me of the hidden or reworded traps on labels. Keeping our foods simple is so much better than the complication that’s being packaged and sold on the market. This does not conform to the healthy eating habits because we are contaminating our bodies with these complicated foods.
Take for instance your delicious Taco Bell Mexican Pizza with 540 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1,020 gr. of sodium. Despite the high fat and sodium this is a complicated dish. This has a whopping 64 different ingredients, looking at it there is nothing unusual; there is the beans, ground beef, tomato sauce, cheeses etc. But, a closer look at the ingredients will jolt your nerves. In the ground beef there 24 ingredients, In the rest of the pizza “there are also loads of complex compounds such as autolyzed yeast extract, maltodextrin, xanthan gum, calcium propionate, fumaric acid, and silicon dioxide”. You may ask what is so special about them well, let’s see, the last one ‘silicon dioxide’ is actually sand, yes sand in an hour glass or what you find on a beach. This is also the stuff that helps strengthens concrete, when harden helps make windowpane. Not the kind of thing you want your children eating, we want to establish healthy eating habits to take them through life.
Boy, do our children love Skittles! At least mine does. Skittles, 240 calories and 47 grams of sugar is made up of ground up sugar, corn syrup and canola oil. It is then topped of with a myriad of laboratory made colors. Some made with the stuff that causes ADHD, there are studies going on now to determine the intensity of the colors and there effect on the healthy eating for children.
There is a lot more information on everyday foods we give our children that we need to be more careful of , I know I am.
To your best health
